What is the Phantom 4 Pro?
The DJI Phantom 4 Pro is an aerial photography and videography powerhouse; we were impressed by it in our review of the original Phantom 4, and with a handful of tweaks for this version of the drone, DJI’s reputation as a premier manufacturer of consumer drones has been further solidified. In addition to the upgraded obstacle avoidance system that will help keep the drone out of trouble, this Phantom 4 upgrade has notably improved upon the camera’s image quality. The increased range and flight time are also welcome improvements to an already solid lineup of features.

Phantom 4 Pros and Cons
-The obstacle avoidance is fantastic. I used it all the time when flying, and I can’t think of a single time it didn’t work as intended.
-The camera is clearly improved from the Phantom 4, especially for video. With no EVF, it’s hard to do a head-to-head comparison with the GoPro Hero 5 Black , but the 4K footage was great. In low light conditions video was also very good.
-The noise profile of the drone is much improved from previous models. The motors are quiet, especially when retracting the landing gear and gimbal, which makes for a very professional presentation when taking off and coming in for a landing . It’s nice that they reduced the volume of the motors while also increasing thrust output.
-The extra flight time is fantastic! I never had any issues getting 25 minutes of flight time with the standard kit battery. The batteries that come with this product are also swappable, which means you could buy some extras and keep them fully charged so they’re ready to go if you need longer than 25 minutes of flight time on a single charge.
-The new controller is very nice and feels solid, though it’s a big step up in price from the previous remote control that comes with the Phantom 4. Other than that, I don’t have much to say about the remote other than that it works fine and has some extra buttons on it (Return to Home, Camera settings, etc.) that are very useful.
-DJI’s drones have a well-deserved reputation for being reliable and stable. I never had any issues with the Phantom 4 Pro staying where it was supposed to or returning to me when I initiated a Return to Home flight plan, which is something I can’t say about other drones on the market.
-The remote control is very pricey. The mobile app gives you a good amount of the same functionality, but if you want to stream video while flying it’s not an ideal solution and I wouldn’t recommend doing it very often. Also, we actually had some issues with video stuttering/dropping out using DJI’s app.
-For whatever reason, the camera only records to the cards in the exact order you put them in. For example, if your first card fills up and you swap it out with a second one, it will keep recording video to that card even after you reformat the first card (even though it’s empty). Only by removing and re-inserting the card will it clear the setting and allow you to record video to a different card. If you reformat the whole set of cards at once, everything is fine, but this would be nice to not have to think about when flying.
Shot With Phantom 4 Pro
I think the DJI Phantom 4 Pro is one of the best drones on the market right now. The camera is great, it’s easy to fly and has some really useful features like dual-operator mode, obstacle avoidance and Return to Home that all help give you peace of mind while flying your drone. The design of this product works well for both beginners and experts, though some of the advanced features definitely require a learning curve.
The new controller is very nice and has some cool features, but it’s also more expensive than just buying an additional mobile device or tablet to use with your existing remote control when you already own the older Phantom 4 model. It goes without saying that DJI dominates the drone market and the Phantom 4 Pro is a great product. If you’re in the market for a new drone, I’d recommend this one without hesitation.
The DJI Phantom 4 Pro is a great product and my personal favorite drone currently on the market. The camera is amazing and the extra flight time is definitely worth it over the previous model. The new sensors make it much more stable and easy to fly indoors. The DJI Go App is also very good and keeps getting better with updates. I think the price point on this drone is a little high as you can get some other drones that offer similar features at a lower cost such as the Yuneec Typhoon 4k which offers about 55 minutes of flight time.
This drone is definitely worth it if you are an aspiring aerial photographer or cinematographer looking to take it up a notch in terms of quality and price point.
Phantom 4 Pro Specs
The total length of the product is 350mm (lens center to rotational axis). The rotor diameter is about 352mm and the height is around 168mm. The maximum horizontal flight speed is about 20m/s and the takeoff weight can be as much as 1200g (including battery and propellers). The maximum flight speed with the standard kit battery is 20m/s. The take-off method is to hold the aircraft in your hand, power it on and throw it lightly so that it rises up vertically about 1 meter above you.
The optimal flying altitude is between 5 and 30 meters. The product can fly within a radius of 15km from the transmitter with no interference or signal fading. The maximum transmission distance is 10km. There are two video transmission protocols: One for 5.8GHz frequency and one for 2.4GHz frequency (this one has higher resolution).
Phantom 4 Pro Latest Pricing
*EDIT: The DJI Phantom 4 Pro can now be found for as low as $1399 on Amazon (YMMV). That is a full $100 off of the price that I paid through DJI’s website and another $400+ cheaper than anywhere else. It’s even cheaper than the new, non-Pro version ($1499) as well as the DJI Mavic (non-pro) as of the writing of this article.
I would highly recommend that you purchase from amazon if possible just because of the convenience and vast inventory they have to offer. One thing worth mentioning is that if something goes wrong with the product, it’s nice to know that you can just simply return it to Amazon without worrying about RMA numbers or dealing with any other additional hassle.
Another potential benefit of purchasing through Amazon is that if you are a student at an academic institution, you might be eligible for substantial discounts on your purchase. This link should provide some useful information on how to take advantage of those benefits if they apply to you.
